Even More Monsters...

So I couldn't resist.. Here are some more Natalie-Monsters. She did all of these and way more on our plane flight last weekend.

Regarding this last one, Natalie said that the big cat looks nice but he is actually mean and that is why the little cat is sad.  That big cat does look a bit evil!

An Unforgetable Occasion

My oldest and very dear friend got married last weekend. I was her matron of honor and Natalie was her flower girl. It was a picture perfect wedding and reception and Natalie even bummed a ride from the bride and groom on their horse and buggy ride from the church to the reception location! I am hoping that they still had a good time on that ride! I would put a picture of the beautiful bride but I want to make sure I am respecting their privacy for online pics of themselves.  Lots of great memories that I will hold dear forever..

Natalie's Creative Project

Nashville Metro Schools has a special preschool program that ties into their GATE program in elementary school and beyond.  For the last few months I have been trying to find out as much as I can about the program and take steps to getting Natalie evaluated.  I figure, worst case scenario, she doesn't get in.  Best case scenario, free once-a-week gifted preschool.  I am IN.  I submitted my application and the next step is submitting either a questionnaire filled out by one's preschool teacher or by doing a "creative project."  Since Natalie is not in preschool this year since if she was, she would simply end up with three years of preschool total, we did the creative project.  This entails us to choose a topic, learn about it extensively and then have Natalie create or invent something that builds on that learned information.  Since Natalie is always telling stories in the car about a theme park called "Cat Land," I thought this may be the best choice of what direction to take with this project.  Cat Land is a theme park where people can bring their house cats to go on rides, romp through the garden, shop, and eat.
Thus, Natalie and I embarked on our whirlwind theme park project.  We read or studied many books about theme parks, maps, and cats.  We also played some Roller Coaster Tycoon and visited some places around Nashville with aspects of things Natalie wanted in her park.  Then we brainstormed some rides and attractions and then finally, created a map of Cat Land complete with a key and a story book about a day spent there.  Natalie also learned about logos and designed her own logo which we then painted on a shirt for her to wear to the meeting and a shirt for her stuffed cat to wear as well.  I also ended up buying a digital recorder where I taped an interview with Natalie about her project since I was concerned that three strangers staring at her may cause her to blank during the meeting.
Today, Friday the 13th of course, we drove on over for Natalie to present her creative project at the school site.  It worked out well that we had a birthday party in the morning to go to since that kept me from dwelling on the meeting all day.  Our appointment was at 1:00.  A nice woman met us in the office and then walked us all down to a classroom to meet the two other teachers that would be evaluating Natalie.  After that, Natalie stayed with them and I took Noelle to the waiting room.  Almost an hour later, the same kind woman came back and both her and Natalie were chatting happily.  The feeling I got was that it went well.  I asked if they listened to the recording and she said they did but that Natalie explained most of what was on there already.  She also told me that Natalie told her that we used to live in San Diego and that we had to fly over lots of states and even over Mars in a plane to get here (hehe).  Of course this is only part of the assessment and I am sure the other part (the IQ Evaluation) holds much more weight, but I certainly feel like a weight has been lifted off both Natalie and my shoulders.  Time will tell what the IQ test results show.  Even though it was a lot of work, I was glad to have the opportunity to do this project with Natalie.  She has been so excited to be the "boss" and to make the decisions.  I also think it has sparked her interest in other related subjects and even today, she wanted to add some more rides and attractions to Cat Land.  I feel so blessed to be home with my girls right now and watching them grow emotionally and mentally, as well as physically, every day.

Natalie is Four!

This morning my little baby woke up and she was 4!  It is hard to wrap my mind around that but I am excited for her.  We spent a beautiful fall day together which started at Cheekwood with some crafts, then led to Franklin for lunch at Mellow Mushroom and a trip to Naticakes; a fancy cupcake shop, for a special birthday treat.  Naticakes is named for a little girl named Natalie which I took as a sign that we must try it out.  Natalie chose the "Pink Pretty Princess Cupcake."  After nap, we headed to a playgroup playdate at a good friend's house.  I was so touched by the other moms who helped to make Natalie's birthday special.  There were quite a few of Natalie's friends there and they loved raking leaves, climbing a tree, and running around together.  I brought cupcakes in neon colors and everyone sang to Natalie.  After we got home, Dada got to spend quality time with his newly 4 year old and we opened presents.  It was simply the perfect birthday for Natalie and she went to sleep under the recently unwrapped glowing stars that now cover her ceiling.

Natalie Blew Me Away Tonight..

So I was watching The Fox and the Hound with the girls when Natalie, 3,  brought me her magnadoodle.  She said "Does this spell a word?"  I looked at it and knew it immediately but had to ask anyway.  "What does it say honey?"  She beamed and said "It spells rabbit!"  Wow.

The Last Halloween Post of the Year!

Ok, I promise.. this is it!  I am already moving on mentally to Thanksgiving and Christmas but first I must declare my love to Halloween and bid it a fine farewell.  Boy did we have a great time.  The Franklin Pumpkin Festival may not have had too many pumpkins but boy was it busy!  It was like a fall themed street fair on steroids.  There were characters everywhere walking around including Dada's favorites; Darth Vader and Chewbaca, and the girls' favorites; Cinderella and Snow White.  We got a taste of small town life with Frankin's chili cook-off.  We paid $5 for a plate covered in little plastic bowls and then went around a large tent and gathered all different kinds of chili from various organizations and restaurants around town.  After eating them, we got to vote on our favorite.  After lunch, the girls got to ride some ponies and talk to Disney Princesses.  We kept the wagon in tow and it came in handy to carry both candy bags and tired kids.

After going home to nap, we headed out for our trick or treating expedition.  My sights were set on a particular neighborhood in Franklin where we dream about moving some day. We had a blast!  In Tennessee, many families sit outside in front of their houses and make fires.  They wait with their candy bowls, or maybe with hot cocoa and popcorn, or even a bouncie house to share with the kids.  It is about twenty degrees colder than in SoCal yet I don't remember ever seeing anyone waiting outside and chatting with neighbors on Halloween where I grew up!  The last cul-de-sac we hit was especially memorable.  The homeowners here really went all out for the kids.  Lights flickered in the windows and the yards were covered with gravestones and the like.  A spook made with a men's sportsjacket swooped down out of the tree right in front of Chris and make him jump!  There was also a talking skeleton that the girls discussed in the car nearly the whole way home.  Fun times!   Farewell Halloween.. I will certainly miss you!
